Tips For Moving House With Older People

Posted on 08/05/2014

Everyone knows that moving house is stressful enough as it is, but if you're moving house with elderly people or older family members then the process can definitely become a lot more difficult for everyone involved! Older people may struggle to adapt to new environments, and you may also need to hire extra help so that you have everything that you need for moving day. Plan for your moving day and get the most out of your house move by following these easy and simple steps! 1) Plan ahead.Moving house with elderly people can cause you a lot of stress, but if you plan in advance then you can have the easy move that you deserve. Make a list of jobs that need doing, schedule which rooms need packing and consider how you're going to cope on moving day. It's also important that you plan for your family members too.  2) Finding care.If your family members need constant care then it's probably worth finding someone to look after them on moving day so that you have the space and time to move quickly, easily and efficiently. Ask around your friends or family as someone might be able to offer the care and support that you need. You should do everything in your power to ensure that you have the time and freedom that you'll need to get all of your jobs done on moving day, so start finding solutions if this is a problem for you. 3) Packing.Elderly family members might need help and assistance with packing up their items, so make sure you schedule in time to do this. If you're downsizing your home for the move then make sure your family is aware of this. Never throw anything out without consulting the rest of your family first, as you could be throwing away something of sentimental value! 4) Helping older family members adjust to their new home. The older members of your family may struggle with adjusting to their new home, so it's important to take the time to introduce them to the idea slowly. It's a good idea to explore your new neighbourhood together so that the surroundings feel a bit more familiar. You might also like to let older family members help with furniture placement and decorating your home. Be aware of what tasks could be too taxing for elderly people and provide help and assistance where you can. 5) Unpacking your home.If the older members of your family needed help packing up their belongings then they'll probably need assistance unpacking them too. Set aside time to help to do this, making sure that your family member is happy with the layout of their new room! If you're moving or arranging furniture then get input from your family as it's going to be their home too!  6) Hiring a removal company. If you need extra help with your house move then you should consider hiring a professional removal company. The right company will be able to offer a wide range of services to help you move safely and easily, so whether you need an extra pair of hands to help pack up your home or if you need assistance with lifting and loading your heavy furniture into a van then hiring professional help is an excellent idea!
